HISTORIAS DEL BLUES

Lo primero que llama la atención de Karapiperis es su estilo para cantar, aprovechando su gruesa voz que le da un tono similar al de Tom Waits, buscando también con su música emular al gran artista estadounidense.

En “Something Like Blues Or Haunted Ballads” Karapiperis hace algo similar a lo que hecho en su anterior disco “Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales”: jugar con una serie de historias que van siendo hiladas por la música, no son relatos sueltos sino que se convierten en una suerte de cuentos musicalizados, creando una paleta de colores y sonidos que pueden llegar a salirse de lo normal.

Además de eso, también llama la atención que este disco es una producción realmente solista ya que es el mismo Karapiperis quién interpreta guitarras, bajo y teclados, instrumentos que se convierten en los acompañantes perfectos para el sonido vagabundo de la armónica por los paisajes que ha creado el griego.

The first thing that caught my attention was the style of Karapiperis' singing since his thick  voice gives a tone similar to that of Tom Waits. His music also emulates the great American artist.

In "Something Like Blues Or Haunted Ballads" Karapiperis does something similar to what he did  in his previous album "Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales". He  plays around  with a series of stories that spin around  his music , creating a palette of colors and sounds that can actually break away from the ordinary due to their originality.

What is very impressive, is the fact that this album was written and composed by himself . Karapiperis   played all the instruments in that CD like the guitar, the  bass and the keyboards, as well as the harmonica which  seems to be the perfect companion for the journey to the landscapes of blues that this Greek artist has created.

I spent the  past few days  listening to an album titled  “Somethin 'Like Blues or Haunted Ballads” composed by the  excellent harpist Paul KARAPIPERIS. Yes, he is coming to us from Greece and the 'front man of a Greek blues band, “ Small Blues Trap”.  This his second  second solo album, which has been self-released , recorded and published two months ago by  his own label, “Shelter Home Studio”. Without a doubt, we have an album that its quality deserves to be part of our everyday life.

Although  Greece is quite far from the Delta Mississippi, but put it like this: sit back, close your eyes and let the disc starts. Interestingly, regardless of where you come from, you will feel that Delta sound and you will see that it doesn’t matter where the musician comes from since the album so honestly and represents what we might call “original blues”.
It is true that  there are plenty of fans of blues musicians who are repulsed by the artists coming from other countries besides luckily I'm not one of them, and I hope you are not one of them.  Without any fear or hesitation, Paul goes on, to presents blues that has a place in this century. I must admit, that is very similar to what we have here  in Croatia, the music of the phenomenal Adam Semijalac aka Babies love. Recognizing all the best that comes to us from the deepest foundation of traditional blues, Paul’s  has done everything by himself. He played  all the instruments on the album, he  is the author of all the lyrics and music,  and all this reflects  a truly inventive, original and above all quality artist. That's why this album is not just a new album, but it is the exact train that brings a rich load of traditional blues with the sources of this unique musical style, from the Mississippi Delta. It's hard to be able to guess that Paul comes from a  home where the popular music is d syrtaki, and it's interesting how Paul has deeply mastered that musical form.

The first album Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales (2009.) Was an excellent start to approach the splendor, wealth and the well known treasures of traditionall blues.

Paul KARAPIPERIS will surely surprise and at first his expressive and totally unpredictable ways of  presenting the blues. Expressive, highly sensitive and a sumptuous presentation form reveals his determination to traditional values ​​of this otherwise very demanding blues lines. Yes, I know, many are not too inclined to listen to traditional blues, some like it 'significantly' to characterize a lot of 'difficult' to listen to, but to me personally it does not pose any problem. Indeed, personally, I am very fond of just such a traditional blues expressions.

RECOMMENDATION:
In the flood of various editions are very few albums that describe practical musical authors, who present traditional blues style. For European blues standards, the album “Somethin’  Like Blues or Haunted Ballads” is  far ahead  as a blues accomplishments for our continent. Paul KARAPIPERIS succeeded in creating  an approach to the blues so close to the original. As many people do not succeed in doing so.

First he gives us  high-quality and original material,
Second he stays cemented to the original roots of the blues and
3rd, through Paul work,  the blues is  given  a new, much broader and more attractive dimension.

So, feel free to check for yourself what it actually is.

Σπάνια ένα άλμπουμ μπορεί να έχει έναν τόσο κατάλληλα περιγραφικό τίτλο όσο αυτός εδώ του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη. Γιατί όντως ο τραγουδιστής και αρμονικίστας των Small Blues Trap, στη δεύτερη προσωπική του δουλειά, παίζει «κάτι σαν μπλουζ ή στοιχειωμένες μπαλάντες».

Τραβώντας την εκφραστική του διάθεση ακόμα περισσότερο σε σχέση με τις ατμοσφαιρικές συνθέσεις του "15 Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales", στη φετινή του δουλειά ο Καραπιπέρης επενδύει ακόμα περισσότερο στη λιτή αλλά πολύ επιβλητική ενορχήστρωση και αρκετά λιγότερο στη συνθετική αμεσότητα και την, κατά το κοινώς νοούμενη, «τραγουδοποιία». Το αποτέλεσμα που προκύπτει είναι μία δουλειά για την blues ελίτ, ας μου επιτραπεί ο όρος, ή, σε κάθε περίπτωση, για ανθρώπους που έχουν ήδη επεξεργαστεί στο μυαλό τους τις μπλουζ φόρμες σε σημαντικό βαθμό, τόσο ώστε να αναζητούν πλέον νέες δομές και νέες εκφραστικές δυνατότητες. Αυτοί μπορεί και να ενθουσιαστούν.

Παράδειγμα το "A Game", που είναι ίσως η αντιπροσωπευτικότερη στιγμή του άλμπουμ. Ξεκινάει ως ένα συνηθισμένο ακουστικό μπλουζ για να μεταλλαχθεί μέσα σε λίγα δευτερόλεπτα σε μία ομιχλώδη σύνθεση βγαλμένη από τους σκοτεινότερους μύθους της περιοχής του Μισισιπή. Κάπως έτσι κυλάνε όλα τα 40 λεπτά του "Somethin' Like Blues Or Haunted Ballads", αλλού με λιγότερες και αλλού με περισσότερες εξάρσεις μυστηρίου. Το επίπεδο παιξίματος είναι εσκεμμένα βασικό ώστε να υπηρετεί τις ανάγκες του κάθε τραγουδιού, οπότε εντυπωσιακά σόλο και δεξιοτεχνικές γραμμές δεν θα πρέπει να αναμένονται. Αντίθετα όμως παρουσιάζεται ένα μεστό, στοχευμένο και σχεδόν τελετουργικό παίξιμο (όλα τα όργανα από τον Καραπιπέρη) που κολακεύει τη βαθιά φωνή του τραγουδιστή.

Ενώ λοιπόν όλα τα παραπάνω ακούγονται σίγουρα ελκυστικά για πολλούς (συμπεριλαμβανομένου και του εαυτού μου), δεν μπορεί να μην σημειωθεί ότι ακόμα και στον ευρύτερο blues χώρο το κοινό που θα απολαύσει το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ είναι μάλλον περιορισμένο. Σε πλήρη αντίθεση με την απλότητα των κλασικών blues, εδώ έχουμε ένα άκουσμα που περισσότερο σκιαγραφεί την παράδοσή τους και πατάει πάνω τους για να δημιουργήσει κάτι περισσότερο διαισθητικό παρά προσιτό. Ουσιαστικά πρέπει να περάσει κανείς πρώτα από το "15 Raindrops..." πριν κάνει το δεύτερο βήμα και δοκιμάσει το "Somethin' Like Blues...". Και πάλι όμως, μία ζεστή καλοκαιρινή νύχτα, με τους γρύλους να δίνουν το δικό τους ρεσιτάλ και υπό έναν ξάστερο ουρανό στην ύπαιθρο, θέλω να πιστεύω ότι ο καθένας να μπορεί να νιώσει την ανατριχίλα ενός "Elf's Fountain", για παράδειγμα.

Griekenland is niet het eerste land waar je aan denkt wanneer je ‘blues’ zegt, maar op de vakantiegangers na zal iedereen kunnen bevestigen dat de situatie in Griekenland alles behalve een feest is. Dat gaan we ook terughoren op het volgende album. Deze bluesartiest refereert in zijn album vaak naar de situatie in zijn land.

‘Somethin’ Like Blues or Haunted Ballads’ is enkel ingespeeld door Paul Karapiperis, frontman van Small Trap Blues. In deze Griekse bluesband speelt Karapiperis harmonica en steel guitar, waarnaast hij ook nog zingt. Invloeden van de band variëren van Willie Dixon tot Jimi Hendrix.

Voor Karapiperis is dit de tweede keer dat hij zichzelf solo presenteert, eerder kwam hij met ‘Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales’ op de proppen. Net als dit album klinkt ook ‘Somethin’ Like Blues or Haunted Ballads’ mysterieus en out of the box. Vele geluidseffecten, gitaarslides en lange uithalen op de harmonica maken het geheel al snel wat mysterieuzer klinken.

Wat mij betreft is het allemaal even te veel; de effecten leiden al snel af van de “echte” muziek. Naar mijn bescheiden mening Karapiperis misschien iets minder kunnen doen in het album en de boel wat simpeler mogen houden. In het nummer ‘You Expect Me To Do The Right Thing’ bijvoorbeeld, begeleid de harmonica op zo’n manier die klinkt als je LP die blijft hangen. Bij het nummer ‘A Game’ heerst er een soort ruis door het nummer.  Voor mij was ‘Light To The Darkest Train(part two)’ dan ook een verademing, waarin er een relatief simpele Chicago Blues tune wordt gespeeld.

Voor de liefhebber, die op zoek is naar de bluesartiest die met een specifieke, eigenaardige, mysterieuze sound is Paul Karapiperis een aanrader. Hij heeft een goede, duistere stem en de teksten mogen er best wezen. De verdrietige bluestekst past goed bij de mysterieuze sound die Karapiperis gemaakt heeft. Echter, voor degenen die houden van muziek zonder te veel poespas, kunnen dit album beter even laten liggen; de geluidseffecten leiden nogal af en kunnen irritant in het gehoor liggen.

Now here’s a man with a strange sort of blues. Paul Karapiperis, singer with Greek blues band Small Blues Trap, is on his second solo album with the release of “Somethin' Like Blues or Haunted Ballads” and he sets his scene like a man possessed by peculiar demons.

There’s reverb aplenty, harmonicas and guitars to paint the sonic picture of torment and a pseudo Beefheartian right angled poetry in what would have been called, in times past, the grooves. As “Try Another Time” spins its web of blue serge however, you come to realise that this album is most definitely more oddball than 12 bars in its nature. Perhaps it is the plethora of strange noises that creep around in the background almost oblivious to the direction of the songs or perhaps it is the growling diffidence of Paul Karapiperis’ voice that makes “Somethin' Like Blues or Haunted Ballads” something vaguely disturbing.

As such things go, very little of this album will appeal to the normal, notoriously unimaginative, blues fan. Fans of a more psychedelic music might however find it to their liking as will those whose tastes are altogether less catholic.

We are not going to talk here about the financial perpectives of Greece and what it means for its inhabitants, because this is a site focused on music and not about economy or commerce. However, you need some money in the proces of making your record, and people need the same to buy it. So, that's why this recording will only (for the moment) be released as a free download from the band's site or if you want to support, you can download it from cd-baby.com fot only 3 Euros. You can't sing it yourself for a price like that, like we say here in Belgium. There's no need for that, because Paul did, all by himself in his "Shelter" home studio in Malesina, Greece.
Our regular readers will know Paul Karapiperis from his band Small Blues Trap from their couple of cd's we already reviewed or from his solo-debut "Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean of Blues Tales ". All of them are were cd's that were kinda special... very original sounding blues releases. Paul's typical voice, very simular to that of Tom Waits give it that special twist. Another thing that returns in all of his releases is the fact that he likes to create little soundtracks in his songs, using minimal sound effects to create a certain mysterious atmosphere for his lyrics. Also on this cd, most of the lyrics are spoken word. The ballads are hort stories or observations told against a musical background of merely dobro, acoustic slide guitar and blues harp. As can be expected, those lyrics are rather pessimistic and bitter this time. Listen, for instance, to "You Expect Me To Do The Right Thing" , where he gives his observations about the country's problems.
Indeed, if there is someone in Europe who has the right to have the blues it are the people from Greece. Paul Karapiperis proves this by bringing us a cd with music that has the sadness of the real old Delta blues, like we know it from the real fathers of the blues like Son House, J.B Lenoir or Mississippi Fred McDowell. Combine that bluesy sound with the modern "Waits" approach and you get a good idea of what to expect from this release. Okay, this is far from easy listening stuff, but for listeners who want to dig a little deeper and who like their blues a little more unique and full of passion, the second solo -recording from this Greek blues-poet might be just what they have been looking for.

BLUES IN THE NORTHWEST

Greece may be having its problems at the moment, but may be it gives inspiration to singer and harmonica player Paul Karapiperis, founder member of the highly-regarded band Small Blues Trap. Take a listen to ‘You Expect Me To Do The Right Thing’ for a direct reference to his country’s woes.

This album – which Paul would like to issue on CD when things pick up – is a completely solo effort, with Paul’s voice coming across somewhere between Howling Wolf and Tom Waits after both men have emptied that bottle of rot-gut whisky and the box of cheap cigars. The backing uses the usual blues instruments but is otherwise rather experimental – the album title is certainly appropriate as certain tracks (the opener ‘Light To The Darkest Train’, and its closing reprise, for starters) come across as quite spooky.

The harp wails, Paul plays acoustic, electric, steel, 12-string and bass guitars as required, plus seemingly random percussion and keyboards. The result is a little unsettling – this is not the blues as easy listening – definitely committed and passionate, and worth investigating by those who prefer their music to mean something.

Οι προσωπικές δουλειές του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη – αλλά και των Small Blues Trap – σπρώχνουν την Ελληνική blues σκηνή μερικά βήματα πιο μπροστά, βλέποντας όμως πάντα με σεβασμό τις ρίζες και διατηρώντας στο ακέραιο την παράδοση των blues.

Η στιχουργική του ικανότητα, βαδίζει μετέωρα ανάμεσα στη λογοτεχνική blues ποίηση και τη βιωματική ζωή ενός αυθεντικού bluesman.

Ένα καταπληκτικό, μη εμπορικό άλμπουμ, κάτι που αντιπροσωπεύει τους ποιοτικούς δημιουργούς,  αλλά και τα απαιτητικά αυτιά των φίλων της μουσικής .

Μια μουσική που ανασύρει από την ψυχή σου πράγματα που έχεις ξεχάσει ή που θα ήθελες να ξεχάσεις, ήταν εμπειρία για μένα να ακούσω αυτό το άλμπουμ, πολλές φορές σήμερα.

Μουσική που σε ταξιδεύει σε μυστικές διαδρομές σε ένα άλλο απόκοσμο επίπεδο .

Γενικά η μουσική των Small Blues Trap και του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη πάντα μου άρεσαν, αλλά εδώ έχουμε κάτι άλλο, κάτι ιδιαίτερο,  σαν να σε παίρνει ένα χέρι και να σε οδηγεί σε ένα ονειρικό τοπίο δείχνοντάς σου σκιές από το παρελθόν  σου.

Για εμένα λειτούργησε σαν ένα soundtrack  που φτιάχτηκε για τις δικές μου σκέψεις και αναμνήσεις,  που  παράλληλα με την μουσική πέρναγαν από το μυαλό μου σαν μια παλιά ασπρόμαυρη ταινία.

Σε αυτό το άλμπουμ ο μουσικός λειτουργεί σαν δρυΐδης που ανακατεύει ένα παλιό μαγικό φίλτρο, βάζοντας απίστευτα πράγματα μέσα, τα ακούς και μοιάζει σαν να τα βλέπεις, όλα λειτουργούν σαν μυσταγωγία .

Ο καλλιτέχνης πολλές φορές μου άφηνε ανεπαίσθητη γεύση από Tom Waits , αλλά εδώ  το πάει πιο πέρα, είναι ένα άλμπουμ που αξίζει  σε βαθμό πολύ περισσότερο από το να υπάρχει σε MP3 και αξίζει  να το ακούσουμε πολλές φορές .

Υπήρξαν στιγμές, που η μουσική με πήγαινε πολύ πίσω στην εποχή των songsters που έβγαζαν ένα σορό παράξενους ήχους, παίζοντας μουσική με τα πάντα, με ότι μπορούσε να παράγει ήχο,  με κρόταλα παλιά ξύλινα κουτιά και ότι άλλο μπορείς να φανταστείς, εδώ  δεν μπορώ να ξεχωρίσω ποιό μου αρέσει πιο πολύ γιατί αισθάνομαι ότι όλη η μουσική είναι από το ίδιο όνειρο.

JAZZ BLUES ROCK

Το “ Somethin’ Like Blues or Haunted Ballads” είναι το δεύτερο προσωπικό album του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη, τραγουδιστή και αρμονικίστα του συγκροτήματος Small Blues Trap, μετά το “Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales” του 2009. Μια Underground παραγωγή που δίνει το στίγμα της ξεκινώντας με το “ Light To The Darkest Train ”.

Τυποποιώντας τα blues με ένα μουσικό κρεσέντο και αναδύοντας μια δυνατή μυρωδιά Νότιου ήχου και υγρασίας νομίζεις ότι κινείσαι ανάμεσα σε καλαμιώνες και απέραντες φυτείες σταχυολογώντας τις πολυτιμότερες νότες του πενταγράμμου.

Για τους μυημένους αυτό το blues αποτελεί ένα είδος μυσταγωγίας που οδηγεί από το απόλυτο μαρτύριο στη λύτρωση κάτι που έρχεται μέσα από το “ The Elf ’ s Fountain ” .

Το “ You Expect Me To Do the Right Thing ” ισοδυναμεί με μια ατέρμονη και συνάμα ιδεατή κατάσταση διαχωρισμού των συναισθημάτων όπως και στο “ Through the Keyhole ” .

Στο “ Try Another Time ” η άμορφη επανάληψη της δεύτερης κιθάρας (τουλάχιστον στην εισαγωγή) μας δίνει την εντύπωση πως όλα σε αυτό τον κόσμο είναι απλά για να ταιριάζουνε και να δένουν μεταξύ τους.

Μια χαρισματική σύνθεση που εμένα τουλάχιστον μου φέρνει στο μυαλό συνθέσεις του εμβληματικού Ennio Morricone είναι το “ The Hawk of The Night ” ενώ το “ Big Fake Smiles ” εγώ θα το χαρακτήριζα ως ένα psychedelic blues sound .

Στο ίδιο μοτίβο και με όμορφα φωνητικά καλύπτεται το “ In Your Sweet Red Garden ” . Τέλος το “ Think Way Back ” και το “ His Own Circus ” έρχονται να συμπληρώσουν το ένα το άλλο.

Σε γενικές γραμμές πάντως το νέο αυτό προσωπικό άλμπουμ του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη είναι ακόμα πιο «φιλοσοφημένο μουσικά» και ταυτόχρονα πιο «δύσκολο» για τα μη εκπαιδευμένα αυτιά.

H νέα δισκογραφική σόλο δημιουργία του bluesman, Παύλου Καραπιπέρη τραγουδιστή, φυσαρμονικίστα αλλά και ιδρυτικού μέλους των Small Blues Trap .

To άλμπουμ φέρει την "ασυνήθιστη" ονομασία "Somethin' Like Blues or Haunted Ballads", μόλις διάβασα τον τίτλο, λέω σίγουρα ο καλλιτέχνης θέλει να πει πολλά και με ιδιαίτερο τρόπο στον ακροατή του.Αν περιμένει κάποιος να ακούσει το γνωστό δωδεκάμετρο blues θα απογοητευτεί.Ενα μοναδικό άλμπουμ με ύφος και μουσικό στύλ αργό, διαφορετικό που ισορροπεί ανάμεσα στην φαντασία και την ονειρική πραγματικότητα .

Από το ξεκίνημα της ακρόασης του άλμπουμ διαπιστώνει κανείς ότι ο χρόνος λειτουργεί σε μια άλλη διάσταση μέσα από τα τραγούδια του Παύλου, μια λυρικά μελαγχολική εικόνα φανερώνεται στο μυαλό σου, μόλις ακούς την απίστευτη φυσαρμόνικα της ποίησης βουτηγμένη στα παλιά βαρέλια γεμάτα αλκοόλ του αμερικάνικου νότου.

Ένα άλμπουμ που παραπέμπει σε ταινία μυστηρίου και σε διαπερνάει από μια ιδιότροπη προσέγγιση του σκοτεινού.Το δημιουργικά νωχελικό πέρα από τα συνηθισμένα blues τραγούδι στο μεγαλείο του. Οι μικρής διάρκειας μπαλάντες που απρόσμενα σε προβληματίζουν με μουσική κινητικότητα παραπέμποντας σε μυστικιστική πλευρά, εκφράζοντας μια άλλη διάσταση που ναι μεν δεν είναι εύκολη στην σύλληψη του μέσου ακροατή, αλλά μαζί με την πάντα βραχνή φωνή του Παύλου προσελκύουν και αγγίζουν την διαφορετικότητα με μοναδικό τρόπο.

Πρωταγωνιστές σε αυτό το άλμπουμ, η steel κιθάρα και η χαρακτηριστική φωνή του Παύλου. Αβίαστα θα το έλεγα ότι αυτή η καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία ίσως κάποιους να κουράσει με την ιδιότυπη "μονοτονία' της, αλλά είναι ρεαλιστικά πρωτότυπη και μπορεί κάλλιστα να γίνει και ένα υπέροχο soundtrack . Αυτό ίσως, που θα έπρεπε να επαναπροσδιορίσει ο δημιουργός θα ήταν η ενορχήστρωση σε κάποια τραγούδια.

Να αναφέρουμε ότι η παραγωγή και η εγγραφή του δίσκου έγινε σε home studio και με μεγάλη επιτυχία. Το εξώφυλλό είναι ζωγραφικός πίνακας του Σωτήρη Kουρούτη και πλήρως αντιπροσωπευτικός του περιεχομένου.
