BOBTJE BLUES... February 2007

Whenever you think of Greece the first things that come to mind are most probably sun, beach, Ouzo or gyros. For me that is, I don't immediately associate blues with this sunny South European country. Nonsense of course, bluesmusic is a universal common property. So why not Greek blues.
This Greek three piece blues band Small Blues Trap is founded in 2004 and just released their second CD called 'Crossroads Ritual'. These musicians try to perform the traditional Chicago blues style with influences from Willy Dixon, Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter amongst other great blues musicians from the past.
Because the band experiments with cowbells, triangles and some other unidentified sound effects some tracks sound a bit odd. But the vocals of lead singer Paul Karapiperis make up for this. Due to his heavy well smoked whisky voice his vocals come close to what Tom Waits sounds like. Which makes this CD worth while, despite the funny sound effects.
The total playing time of this CD is with a little over forty minutes, a bit on the short side and it has several weak moments. Especially the instrumental tracks sound somewhat amateurishly and they don't give me a blues feeling. Fortunately all tracks stand alone and because of the variation there is still enough to enjoy and to get some satisfaction.
