LA HORA DEL BLUES...December 2010
Here comes a band of Greek musicians sharing the same passion, to play the blues, which is what they like since it satisfies them the most.
The Small Blues Trap is a well known Greek blues band consisting of Paul Karapiperis, on steel and slide guitar, keyboards, harmonica and vocals, Panagiotis Daras guitar, slide and acoustic guitar, Lefteris Besios, bass and Stathis Evangeliou drums.
Besides playing properly the blues music, the group combines different elements in its approach to the blues, including seventies rock and some jazz.
Thirteen winding ambiguous but at the same time magical tracks, sung in a relaxed, restrained peaceful way, with the original and simultaneously peculiar Paul Karapiperis’ voice, halfway between Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen.
Paul has written most of the repertoire Included in this, "Red Snakes & Cave Bats ” album.

Στις 17 και 18 Δεκεμβρίου ταξιδεύουμε με το ποταμόπλοιο VINILION στα νερά του Μισσισσιππή για να συναντήσουμε το μπλούζ και την ιστορία του. Ξεναγός μας ο Ηλίας Ζαϊκος με τους Blues Wire. Στις 17 του Δεκέμβρη, μαζί με τους Blues Wire , οι Small Blues Trap που θα παίξουν τα γνωστά αλλά μοναδικά και γεμάτα λυρισμό Dark Blues τους. Ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης μαζί με το Δημήτρη Επικούρη θα χαρίσουν το δικό τους πόνημα «15 Σταγόνες Βροχής σε έναν Ωκεανό από Μπλούζ Ιστορίες» (CD και βιβλίο μαζί) σε 15 τυχερούς φίλους της κλήρωσης που θα διοργανώσει το Vinilion κατά τη διάρκεια της βραδιάς. Πoλλοί καλεσμένοι και Open Jam στο τελευταίο set… Στις 18 του Δεκέμβρη, δύο θρυλικές μπλουζ μπάντες με ιστορία άνω των 25 ετών, οι Blues Wire και οι Blues Cargo τζαμάρουν παρέα για πρώτη φορά ώστε όλοι μαζί να ταξιδέψουμε στο Chicago του Muddy Waters, του Howlin' Wolf και του Buddy Guy. ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗΣ ΕΠΙΚΟΥΡΗΣ-15 σταγόνες βροχής σ’ έναν ωκεανό από μπλούζ ιστορίες
Κυκλοφόρησε το τρίτο βιβλίο του Δημήτρη Επικούρη
με τίτλο «15 σταγόνες βροχής σ’ έναν ωκεανό από μπλούζ ιστορίες», βασισμένο πάνω στο προσωπικό album του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη “Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales”.
Ο Δημήτρης Επικούρης γεννήθηκε το 1963 στη Νίκαια του Πειραιά και σπούδασε στις Η.Π.Α. οικονομικές και πολιτικές επιστήμες. Από το 1990 διδάσκει την αγγλική γλώσσα στο φροντιστήριό του. To μεγάλο του πάθος είναι η μουσική του blues και η Επικούρεια φιλοσοφία.
Από τον πρόλογο του βιβλίου:
«Κοίτα, φίλε. Να σου εξομολογηθώ κάτι. Αυτό το μικρό πόνημα το έγραψα ακούγοντας ένα μπλουζ CD του καλού μου φίλου, του Παύλου Καραπίπέρη. Το άκουσα πολλές φορές αφήνοντας τα αλήτικά του μπλουζ να μπούνε μέσα μου σαν το μυρωδάτο λικέρ που γλιστράει ζεστά και γλυκά μέσα στο λαρύγγι το καταχείμωνο, δίπλα από ένα κούτσουρο που καίει και με μυαλό ορεξάτο για ταξίδια μακρινά στα βάθη των ανθρώπινων αισθήσεων και παραισθήσεων που δεν έχουνε τέλος και αρχή.
Κάθισα λοιπόν και κατέγραψα ότι οι Μούσες μου υπαγόρευαν την ώρα που η μουσική του Παύλου ξελόγιαζε το νου και τις αισθήσεις μου. Χρησιμοποιώντας τη γλώσσα του μεσοπολέμου και ταξιδεύοντας ανάποδα στην καμπύλη του χρόνου του κυκλικού, βάλθηκα να μιλήσω όπως μιλούσαν οι λαϊκοί άνθρωποι του πόνου και του μόχθου. Οι άνθρωποι με μπέσα και φιλότιμο.
Το ευχαριστήθηκα πολύ είναι αλήθεια. Ο Παύλος με βοήθησε και έβγαλα από μέσα μου πράγματα που κούρνιαζαν για πολλά χρόνια, σκέψεις μέχρι τώρα αταξινόμητες και συναισθήματα χαρμολύπης, νοσταλγίας και όνειρα παιδιάστικα γεμάτα από μια ένοχη αθωότητα που πολλοί από μας ντρέπονται σήμερα να λαχταρίσουν.
Αν τελικά σου αρέσει να σκάβουν τα μπλουζ το πετσί σου και να τρυπώνουν μέσα στο δέρμα των ονείρων σου, τότε είσαι και εσύ άτομο ιδιαίτερο. Δεν είσαι τυχαίος για να ακούς αυτή τη μουσική επιτρέποντας στα μπλουζ να μιλάνε στα σωθικά σου. Είσαι και εσύ νεραϊδοχαϊδεμένος όπως όλοι εμείς που ξεστρατίζουμε επικίνδυνα από τη ζελατίνη της πλαστικής διασκέδασης των πρωϊνάδικων, των τηλεμαϊντανών, των διασκεδαστών της δεκάρας, των "γιαλαντζί καλλιτεχνών", των "περίπου" αντρών, των "ροζ" επαναστατών και της φτήνιας που μας ταΐζουν.
Χαλάρωσε λοιπόν και άσε τον Παύλο να ξεναγήσει και εσένα σε κόσμους μυστικούς μέσα από το δικό του πλούσιο και αμόλυντο ψυχισμό. Άσε τον να γίνει ο ξεναγός σου σ' αυτό το ταξίδι.
Θα ήθελα μονάχα, όταν τελειώσεις το άκουσμα αυτού του CD και το διάβασμα αυτού του μικρού πονήματος, να έχουνε μεγαλώσει τα φτερά της λευτεριάς της δικής σου και της δικής σου φαντασίας. Εύχομαι ολόψυχα να εξακολουθήσεις να σεργιανάς εκεί που μιλάνε μονάχα οι ψυχές ανθρώπων ατόφιων και ιερών. Εύχομαι να συνεχίσεις να ονειρεύεσαι όπως όλοι εμείς που αποφασίσαμε πως μιας και βρεθήκαμε στη ζωή, είναι καλύτερα να πολεμάμε μάταια απ' το να ζούμε μάταια.

Η έλευση των Small Blues Trap στη Λιβαδειά έδωσε επίσης την ευκαιρία στη viotia να συνομιλήσει με τον Παύλο Καραπιπέρη, τη φωνή της μπάντας, ένα τραγουδοποιό που έχει ήδη ξεχωρίσει σε πανελλήνιο επίπεδο.Ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης είναι 31 ετών, κοινωνιολόγος και θεωρεί ότι η ανάγκη «να παίξουν μουσική» ήταν η πρώτη αφορμή για συναντηθεί η τροχιά του με τα άλλα μέλη της μπάντας. «Ο Λευτέρης ο Μπέσιος είναι από τη Μαλεσίνα και ο Παναγιώτης ο Δάρας είναι από το Μαρτίνο», μας λέει και συνεχίζει: «Μόλις συναντηθήκαμε βάλαμε κάτω τα μουσικά μας ακούσματα που όπως είναι φυσικό καλύπτουν ένα μεγάλο φάσμα. Καταλήξαμε, ανταμώσαμε στο μπλουζ. Αυτή είναι η ρίζα, όλα τα άλλα είναι παρακλάδια».
Από το να παίζεις μουσική μέχρι να συνθέτεις blues και μάλιστα να υπάρχουν θετικές κριτικές από τον ειδικευμένο τύπο υπάρχει μια απόσταση. Πώς καλύπτεται; «Στην αρχή παίζαμε διασκευές αλλά αργότερα συνειδητοποιήσαμε ότι θέλουμε να αφήσουμε το δικό μας άρωμα και αρχίσαμε να παίζουμε τα blues με τον δικό μας τρόπο. Στην πορεία βρέθηκε ένα παιδί από τη Λιβαδειά, ο Γιώργος ο Πούλος, ο πρώτος μας ντράμερ, κάναμε κάποια live. Από το 2007 ντράμερ των Small Blues Trap είναι ο επίσης Λιβαδείτης ο Στάθης ο Ευαγγελίου. Παίζουμε θα έλεγα ημι-επαγγελματικά και φυσικά όλα τα τραγούδια που υπάρχουν στα CD μας είναι δικά μας, ως σύνθεση και ως στίχος».
Υπάρχει ανταπόκριση; Πώς αντιλαμβάνεται ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης την επιτυχία μια πλευρά που είναι «περίεργη» για τέτοιου είδους μπάντες; «Η επιτυχία είναι μυστήρια έννοια. Κάνουμε αυτό που αγαπάμε, έχουμε το κοινό μας. Κάνουμε 2-3 live τον μήνα, έχουμε παρουσία στα δισκοπωλεία με το CD Magic Session και φυσικά σε όλο το διαδίκτυο, στους ειδικευμένους ιστότοπους, το amazon, i-tune, youtube κ.λπ.».
Η θεματολογία των τραγουδιών των Small Blues Trap στην παράδοση των μπλουζ και τους στίχους γράφει συνήθως ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης. Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές του νεαρού τραγουδοποιού; «Λατρεύω τα ρεμπέτικα. Η δεκαετία του ‘30 μπορεί να παραλληλιστεί με την ταυτόχρονη ανάπτυξη τωn blues. Υπήρξε κάποτε καλό τραγούδι στην Ελλάδα. Εμείς παίζουμε blues και είναι λογικό να έχουμε επιρροές από μεγάλους του χώρου όπως ο Σον Χάους, ο Τζόνσον. Στο Σικάγο ο Μάντι Γουότερς, ο Γουίλι Ντίξον. Στα ευρωπαϊκά ο Τζον Μάγιαλ, ο Αλέξις Χόρνερ, ο Πίτερ Γκριν».

From Greece comes harmonica player Paul Karapiperis who brings us an album with fifteen own songs.
Karapiperis is a well-known musician in Greece blues circles, because in 2004 he was leader and founder of a prestigious band called Small Blues Trap.
Now he presents us his most intimist relaxed and poetic face in a practically acoustic format, where he slowly tells us his own stories on a short tales format.
The cd was recorded and mixed between September and December 2008 at Shelter Home studios in Malesina, Greece by Paul Karapiperis himself, who also supervised the whole project.
If you look for peace and relax your mind with a balsamic soft music, then probably this cd will give you what you need, but if you look for exciting strong feelings, then forget it.

“Greek blues” usually refers to rembetika but here we can take it literally.
Paul is a multi-intrumentalist, predominantly on guitar and harmonica on these fifteen tracks, all of which are blues-based at least, with a strong influence in places from Robert Johnson.
Most of the music is acoustic, though there is some use of electric guitar.
Rather than being blues pure and simple though, many numbers are more akin to tone poems, with Paul's frequently dramatic voice used to full effect. The overall effect is very melancholy and certainly interesting!

Blues for sure, but then experiment-style, and not unimportant, with a high Tom Waits contents. This is how you could describe the album ‘Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales’ in a nutshell.
Multi-instrumentalist Paul Karapiperis (voice, mouthorgan, percussion, acoustic and steel guitar) brought out an album once before with his band Small Blues Trap. The album “Crossroad Ritual”, from 2004, was then welcomed by Bobtjes Blues Pages, as well as a whole lot of other blueszines- and magazines with praising critics.
Paul and band have their home in Malesina (a city in Phthiotis, central Greece).
This new CD seems to be Paul’s solo project.
That Paul is a great mouthorgan player straightaway shows in the first song (with title) ‘Welcome On Board! Clap Your Hands’. A Mississippi Delta blues song which shines by his simplicity and purity.
Also very nice is ‘Crazy Tones’ which has a really jazzy undertone.
A lot of songs have got something mythical about them.
So has ‘A Voodoo Woman Can...’, (mainly due to Paul’s steel-guitar sound), an almost hynothic effect.
Something else that can be said about the song ‘S.B.T’.
Just as on the previous CD Paul and band made use of percussion attributes. This time, again it’s enjoyable with Paul’s smoky heavy voice.
The other band members Panagiotis Daras (guitar), Lefteris Besios (bass) and pianist/keyboard player Sotiris Kouroutis know their task, which means they just limit themselves to the essential. Assist wherever necessary and for the rest let the master do his own thing.
OK, maybe not a CD to everyone’s liking. But the blues lover who likes a bit of experimenting will know how to appreciate it.

Das Gründungsmitglied der griechischen Blueser von Small Blues Trap mit einem Solo-Album, und einem eigenwilligen noch dazu.
Eine Platte, „where the soul, love, obsession, memories and passions are mixed together creating an intuitive scenario in a theatrical way“.
Der Hinweis auf das „theatralische“ Element scheint nicht zu weit hergeholt.
"Fifteen Raindrops…" ist viel mehr eine Soundkollage, denn ein typisches Bluesalbum.
Sowohl von Instrumentierung als auch Stimmung und Vocals her, erinnert Karapiperis mehr als nur einmal an Tom Waits.
Mit ein wenig Hilfe von einigen Freunden, zelebriert der Grieche an Stimmbändern, Harmonica, Percussion, Bass, Gitarren und Keyboards fünfzehn Kleinode der etwas anderen Bluesart, sparsam instrumentiert, zwischen Delta und Voodoo.
Bisweilen düster, oftmals schräg aber stets interessant, keine leichte Kost indessen.
In erster Linie wird akustisch zu Werke geschritten, mit dem einen oder anderen elektrischen Sprengsel.
Ein Album, mit dem man sich intensiver beschäftigen muss.

Singer and harpist Paul Karapiperis with his band called the Small Blues Trap has created a very personal album which he solely produced himself. The title of the album is Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales. Admit it. Do you think you have heard it all? Well, keep on reading this text.
Paul Karapiperis as well as the rest of the band, comes from Greece. In 2004, they formed the Small Blues Trap. Certainly, there are bands and musicians from all over Europe who care about the blues. Although I hadn’t the opportunity to listen to their previous releases, I did listen to their latest work titled “ Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales” and it is indeed a very good work with elegance and richness full of elegance and concerning the traditional blues music. It is unquestionably a treasure trove of traditional blues.
Although thousands of kilometers away from the roots of that old specific music style, Karapiperis and his band will surely be a pleasant surprise to everyone who listens to that album since it is a very expressive, sensitive and luxurious in terms of playing styles, work. Furthermore, it clearly depicts the bands wide affiliation with traditional blues values which is something rather difficult and demanding.
Yes, I know that many are not very much inclined to listen to traditional blues saying that it is a genre that is quite difficult to listen to but I personally had no such problem since I happen to be fond of traditional blues expressions. In addition, it is rather clear that the band worked with great enthusiasm and passion for this CD.
RECOMMENDATION:
In the abundance of many different music styles, a small number of some very unique productions such as this one, are definitely worth of our attention. My opinion is that this particular album is far beyond the European standards and should be a trademark of blues achievement produced in our continent.
Undoubtedly, there is plenty of space for such music and my purpose for writing this article is not to play the role of a critic wishing to pinpoint weaknesses and faults in this work but instead, to encourage other gifted artists as well to follow the example of Paul Karapiperis and produce similar Cds.
So, the only thing that remains is to check out this album for yourselves and enjoy the music that is “trapped” inside.

Ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης είναι ο αρμονικίστας και τραγουδιστής της blues μπάντας Small Blues Trap που είναι ενεργή από το 2004, έχοντας ως ορμητήριο τη Μαλεσίνα της Φθιώτιδας. Υπό τον πολύ όμορφο τίτλο "Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tale s ", όμως, παρουσιάζει δεκαπέντε (ως αναμενόμενο) καθαρά προσωπικές του συνθέσεις. Προσωπικές όχι μόνο σε ό,τι έχει να κάνει με το δημιουργικό κομμάτι, αλλά σε μεγάλο βαθμό και με το εκτελεστικό. Αναλαμβάνει, πέρα από τα φωνητικά και τη φυσαρμόνικα, τις κιθάρες (ακουστική, ηλεκτρική και steel), το μπάσο, τα πλήκτρα και τα κρουστά (ε, δεν έμεινε και τίποτα), δεχόμενος σποραδικές μόνο συμμετοχές από τους συνεργάτες του στην «κανονική» του μπάντα.
Το κλίμα του άλμπουμ είναι γενικά ακουστικό και οικείο, σχεδόν εξομολογητικό στον τρόπο που διηγείται τις blues ιστορίες του. Η εκφραστικότητα της φωνής του Καραπιπέρη κερδίζει εξαρχής τον ακροατή με το βάθος της και ταιριάζει γάντι με το ύφος των τραγουδιών. Η ομοιότητα με τις αντίστοιχες ερμηνείες από blues, ή σχετιζόμενους με τα blues, καλλιτέχνες όπως ο John Campbell ή ο Tom Waits είναι πρόδηλη, γίνεται όμως με άποψη και χωρίς στυλιζάρισμα, οπότε προσθέτει στο αποτέλεσμα.
Είναι όμως η ενορχήστρωση αυτή που τελικά διαχωρίζει τα απλώς καλά από τα πραγματικά ξεχωριστά κομμάτια. Για παράδειγμα το ορχηστρικό "Midnight Ride" είναι άκρως ελκυστικό μέσα στο κλίμα μυστηρίου που δημιουργεί, παρά τη σύντομη διάρκειά του. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για τραγούδια όπως τα "Dr. Lonely", "Goodbye My Good Luck", "A Dance With The Shadows", όπου η χρήση των οργάνων γίνεται με αρκετά έξυπνο τρόπο, ώστε πέρα από τη μουσικότητά τους να δημιουργούν ήχους ταιριαστούς με την ατμόσφαιρα και τους στίχους του τραγουδιού. Στα προηγούμενα μάλιστα επαινείται ιδιαίτερα η, διακριτική μεν, ουσιαστική δε, χρήση κάθε είδους κρουστών.
Η γοητεία του άλμπουμ είναι τέτοια που με ωθεί να ομολογήσω ότι, ενώ κι άλλοι καλοί blues δίσκοι βγαίνουν κατά καιρούς στην Ελλάδα, ο συγκεκριμένος έχει κάτι παραπάνω, έχει το κάτι που τον κάνει πιο πειστικό, έχει αυτό το απροσδιόριστο προσόν που μόνο ως ...mojo θα μπορούσα να χαρακτηρίσω. Αξίζει της προσοχής και της ακρόασης όλων των φίλων του είδους.

Το ίδιο ισχύει και για τραγούδια όπως τα "Dr. Lonely", "Goodbye My Good Luck", "A Dance With The Shadows", όπου η χρήση των οργάνων γίνεται με αρκετά έξυπνο τρόπο, ώστε πέρα από τη μουσικότητά τους να δημιουργούν ήχους ταιριαστούς με την ατμόσφαιρα και τους στίχους του τραγουδιού. Στα προηγούμενα μάλιστα επαινείται ιδιαίτερα η, διακριτική μεν, ουσιαστική δε, χρήση κάθε είδους κρουστών.
Η γοητεία του άλμπουμ είναι τέτοια που με ωθεί να ομολογήσω ότι, ενώ κι άλλοι καλοί blues δίσκοι βγαίνουν κατά καιρούς στην Ελλάδα, ο συγκεκριμένος έχει κάτι παραπάνω, έχει το κάτι που τον κάνει πιο πειστικό, έχει αυτό το απροσδιόριστο προσόν που μόνο ως ...mojo θα μπορούσα να χαρακτηρίσω. Αξίζει της προσοχής και της ακρόασης όλων των φίλων του είδους.

Just a year ago, we at Rootstime were surprised by a very original CD from a blues band from Greece, of all places!
"Small Blues Trap" that band was called and the singer, guitarist and frontman Paul Karapiperis especially attracted our attention: their music was, thanks to him, a very special blend of all the good ingredients fromthe Delta, and especially Paul's typical Tom Waits-like vocals and singing style was remarkable.
The only minor complaint we had about that release was the abundance of extravagant and sometimes carnival-esque additives in their sound which sometimes was a bit "over the top ", especially given the very short duration time of the whole release, about forty minutes .
However, The frontman now has released his own debut and the first problem is solved, no more or at least less crazy additives,what we get here instead is a nice balanced blues CD with only the strong elements remaining.
Paul's wonderful voice, which we only can describe again as " very regularly reminding of Tom Waits, is very strong, but this time focused on the blues.
Mainly with a quiet atmosphere, acoustic, and with occasionally some nice mellow harmonica work.
The love of Paul for short songs which create a sort of soundscape or cinematic soundtrack still remains, and sometimes it feels like little films, as the title already indicates, fifteen short fragments full of bluesy feelings .
Together, these fifteen songs are just enough for three quarters of music.
However, I fully enjoyed this CD, soul filled songs about love, reflections and obsessions, like a somewhat theatrical scenario.
Paul's quiet harp playing and his tricone steel guitar bring the Delta to Malesina ,Greece.
Songs like "In wood Alcohol Line", "SBT" and "Up In Heaven & Down In Hell" are great examples of how Paul's blues is at his best, and we would like to see it evolve that way, with both feet planted deep in the pre-war blues and using that unique voice of him.
This would even get him some attention in America, we think.
In that case, we would advice him to reduce the"soundtrack" style songs to a minimum, and add some more deep, pure blues tracks. He has proven he's a master in that!

The last time that I came across Paul Karapiperis was with the CD Crossroad Ritual by the Greek band Small Blues Trap, of which Karapiperis is the main man. That was an excellent album which proved that European blues can be almost as good as any.
This CD, 15 Raindrops in an Ocean of Blues Tales, reinforces the view that I had of Crossroad Ritual – it has 15 tracks all written (music & lyrics) by Paul Karapiperis and he has assembled some good musicians to help him along.
Incidentally, my only criticism of the CD is that it is slightly lacking in information about who plays which instrument – we know that Karapiperis is the harp player, but there are three other guys in the band who play something. That’s a very small criticism, and it can be forgiven by the fact that Paul Karapiperis has produced the CD himself.
The content of the CD is best described as experimental blues, I guess, but behind the different sounds incorporated in the album, plenty of good blues guitar and harmonica shines through.
The CD opens with an intriguing harmonica solo “Welcome Onboard! Clap Your Hands” and then moves into a very slow blues “Let’s Do The Boogie All Night.” Track three, “A Voodoo Woman Can,” features Karapiperis’ stylish harmonica playing on another slow blues, whilst the next track, “In Wood Alcohol Line,” picks up the tempo ever so slightly and features some well picked guitar.
There’s not much up-tempo music on here, it’s all fairly laid back, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a good album – you just need to be in the mood for some slow blues.

Paul K is one of the founding members of the internationally known Grecian blues band Small Blues Trap that played to fans in 2008’s International Blues Challenge. Paul takes a shot at solo success with his release here – demonstrating his dynamic harmonica skills and instantly identifiable vocals.
For most people to identify this as entirely blues would be an incorrect statement. Think of John Lee Hooker’s The Healer going for a more Mediterranean feel and you may have it. Paul K however is purely on display on all of the fifteen tracks here. If Tom Waits had been from Greece, this is who he would sound like. The songs are a little heavily accented and makes some of the lyrics a little garbled. He does have decent command of English however, some of the lyrics sense do remain a mystery.
The arrangements here vary from world music ambience with jazz harmonica breaks to modern acoustic blues. The modern acoustic blues are a real treat on the disc and are definitely worth a listen. The other more electric, ambient tracks were a little hard for me to listen to. Paul does demonstrate a virtuoso’s command of the harmonica but could use some toning down (i.e. too many notes/tricks in one space). My suggestion for further releases would be for this group to stick to the solid acoustic blues, firmly rooted in the prewar traditions and then the American blues markets will surely take notice. Yet, it’s still pretty cool to see that even someone so far away as Greece can still find a handle on some of blues deep traditions and sounds.

Die fünfzehn "Regentropfen" (sprich Songs) dieser CD stammen sämtlich aus der Feder von Paul Karapiperis selbst, seines Zeichens ansonsten Sänger und Harpspieler der griechischen Band Small Blues Trap.
Auf seinem Solodebüt tritt der Multiinstrumentalist allerdings auch als Gitarrist, Bassist, Keyboarder und Percussionist in Erscheinung, sodass er lediglich bei sechs Tracks auf die Unterstützung durch weitere Musiker an Gitarre, Bass und Keyboards zurückgreifen muss.
Was beim ersten Hören auffällt, ist eine Tendenz dazu, bluesige Töne mitunter mit Harmonien zu kombinieren, die für das Ohr des Bluesfans zunächst einmal recht fremd klingen, so etwa bei den Titeln "A Voodoo Woman Can ..." oder "Dr. Lonely".
Mit seinem düsteren Sprechgesang lässt Karapiperis zudem nicht nur beim letztgenannten Song, vermutlich bewusst, immer wieder deutliche Anklänge an Tom Waits aufkommen.
Insgesamt sicherlich nicht nur für Freunde der Zwölftaktmusik ein ziemlich gewöhnungsbedürftiges Album.

Παράξενα αλλά όμορφα σκαρωμένα πράγματα γίνονται στη χώρα των Ολυμπίων Θεών τελικά. Ποιος θα μπορούσε να φανταστεί ότι ένα νέο παλικάρι από τη Μαλεσίνα με τόση μεγάλη επιδεξιότητα, λυρισμό και πάθος θα διοχέτευε με έναν αριστουργηματικό και χειμαρρώδη τρόπο όλο του το ταλέντο στη μουσική του μπλουζ. Ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης είναι κοινωνιολόγος και μουσικός του μπλουζ. Παίζει εξαιρετική ακουστική κιθάρα και φυσαρμόνικα. Η πολλά υποσχόμενη μπλουζ μπάντα του, οι "Small Blues Trap" κυριολεκτικά παγιδεύουν το ενδιαφέρον κάθε λάτρη του μπλουζ που του δίνεται η ευκαιρία να τους ακούσει.
Ο Παύλος είναι χαρισματικός τραγουδιστής με πάμπολλους χρωματισμούς που κινούνται σε μια ευρεία κλίμακα που ξεκινά από ακατέργαστη και γεμάτη πάθος αγριάδα για να καταλήξει σε ένα υπνωτικό νανούρισμα. Η φωνή του, που θυμίζει έντονα τον Tom Waits στις καλές μπλουζιάρικες στιγμές του συνδυάζεται μοναδικά με τις κινήσεις του σώματός του και τις εκφράσεις του όταν τραγουδά στη σκηνή. Το όλο σύνολο είναι σίγουρα μια πολύ μεγάλη και ευχάριστη έκπληξη για όποιον επιθυμεί να αναζητήσει νέα σύνορα για το μπλουζ εκτός των ΗΠΑ.
Η ακατάπαυστη ενέργεια του Παύλου κατάφερε μ' ένα μαγικό τρόπο να συμπυκνωθεί στο πρώτο του προσωπικό CD με τίτλο "Fifteen Raindrops in An Ocean of Blues Tales".
Σ' αυτό το πολύ προσωπικό πόνημα, ο Παύλος ξεδιπλώνει τη χαρισματική του προσωπικότητα μέσα από μια σειρά τραγουδιών που συνδέονται μεταξύ τους με ένα μοναδικό τρόπο που αναμφίβολα χρίζει τον Παύλο πέρα από μουσικό δημιουργό και ποιητή. Στο συγκεκριμένο CD ο Παύλος μετατρέπεται σε αρχαίο ραψωδό, έναν σύγχρονο Όμηρο που συνθέτει τη δική του μπλουζ Οδύσσεια. Ο Παύλος αφηγείται, αυτοσχεδιάζει, προβληματίζει, χαλαρώνει, και ταξιδεύει τον ακροατή μέσα από μία σπονδυλωτή μπλουζ ιστορία που είναι ταυτόχρονα παλιά και καινούργια. Παλιά, γιατί περιέχει όλα τα ανθρώπινα συναισθήματα που στο τέλος αποκωδικοποιεί αναμειγνύοντας τα, αλλά συνάμα και καινούργια γιατί ο Παύλος καταφέρνει να δραπετεύσει από το καθιερωμένο μπλουζ του στυλ "I Woke up this morning".
Αναμφίβολα, το CD περιέχει στοιχεία από τους Blues Incorporated του Alexis Korner και έντονα στοιχεία ψυχεδέλειας που έντονα θυμίζουν τους Graham Bond Organisation με τον Ginger Baker και τους λοιπούς μουσικούς του συγκεκριμένου ρεύματος.
Το CD απαιτεί μία συγκεκριμένη διάθεση και πνευματική και σωματική για να περάσει μέσα από τις εγκεφαλικές κυψέλες και να ενεργοποιήσει μια παράξενη ευχάριστη διάθεση για περιπλάνηση σε κόσμους αλλιώτικους και απροσέγγιστους λόγω της ρουτίνας και της καθημερινότητάς μας. Εύκολα κανείς θα μπορούσε να παρομοιάσει το CD του Παύλου με ένα καλό λικέρ ή ένα σπιτικό μυρωδάτο Moonshine φτιαγμένο παράνομα σε κάποιο αγρόκτημα του Αμερικάνικου Νότου. Η κάθε γουλιά και στη περίπτωσή μας, το κάθε άκουσμα απαιτεί το κάποιο χρόνο μέχρι να «κατέβει» και να αισθανθεί κανείς το γλυκό "κάψιμο" στο λαρύγγι από το λυρισμό, την ποίηση και τη συνθετική ικανότητα του Παύλου. Όταν αυτό επιτευχθεί, τότε ο Παύλος υπομονετικά συνοδεύει τους ακροατές του ως ένας άλλος Δρυίδης μύστης σε ένα μαγικό βόρειο δάσος όπου μαζεύονται όλοι όσοι επιθυμούν να ξεκλειδώσουν τη ψυχή τους και να συναντήσουν κομμάτια του εαυτού τους που μέχρι τώρα δεν γνώριζαν. Σ' αυτό το κομμάτι, η μουσική του μπλουζ που καλά κατέχει ο Παύλος, βοηθά αφάνταστα μιας και είναι το μοναδικό κλειδί που τόσο πετυχημένα ξεκλειδώνει τα ανθρώπινα συναισθήματα μιας και δεν είναι μόνο πολύ ανθρώπινο αλλά και ανθρωπιστικό. Το μπλουζ έχει σαν επίκεντρό του τον άνθρωπο επιχειρώντας να τον περιγράψει στον ίδιο του τον εαυτό. Το μπλουζ μας βοηθάει να καταλάβουμε καλύτερα ποιοι είμαστε, τι θέλουμε, που πάμε, τι σιχαινόμαστε, ποιους δεν θέλουμε και τι πραγματικά αγαπάμε.
Ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης τα γνωρίζει καλά όλα τούτα και συνεπώς το μόνο που επιθυμώ να του ευχηθώ είναι να συνεχίσει να πορεύεται σαν ένας μοναχικός ραψωδός στα μονοπάτια της ανθρώπινης υπόστασης και ψυχισμού, στα μονοπάτια του μπλουζ……………..

Blues is truly an international art form now, so when I received Fifteen Raindrops in an Ocean of Blues Tales in its original mail wrapping from Greece, I was intrigued over how the blues would be interpreted by a leading Greek musician.
Paul Karapiperis, founding member of the Greek blues band Small Blues Trap, is lead singer and harmonica player with the group; this CD with the awkward and overlong title, Fifteen Raindrops in an Ocean of Blues Tales, is his first recording without Small Blues Trap.
However, it is not really a solo album, because Karapiperis is accompanied by three other Greek blues musicians, Panagiotis Daras, Lefteris Besios, and Sotris Kouroutis.
Although the accompanying musicianship is unattributed, heard on the CD are drums and percussion, upright bass, acoustic and electric guitars, vibes, piano and organ, with Karapiperis featured on vocals and Sonny Boy Williamson II-style acoustic harp.
Fifteen Raindrops is all original music, with melodies and lyrics composed by Karapiperis.
Fifteen Raindrops opens with a rousing Sonny Boy Williamson II-like harp solo accented with percussion, “Welcome Onboard! Clap Your Hands!” a chugging train song built around a gospel melody.
It is one of three instrumentals on the CD, all extending this train-journey motif.
The ending track is an expectant, moody jazz instrumental with blues inlay, “The End—or The Start—Of the Journey,” while in the middle, on track 7, is another jazz-blues instrumental on the same theme, “Midnight Ride.”
Jazz-blues intersperses on the CD with traditional blues styling drawn from Delta blues, with seven tracks blues and eight tracks jazz-blues.
Yet, genre lines are by no means demarcated, as within individual songs there is frequently an effortless glide from one blues approach to another, or from blues to jazz.
While four of the ensemble numbers here, which are all guitar-based in accompaniment, are built around Delta blues styling, track 9, “There Is No Place For You,” has a Piedmont blues feel, while track 11, “A Dance With Shadows,” is a guitar-with-piano-emphasis torch song.
The four Delta numbers—track 3, “A Voodoo Woman Can…,” track 4, “In Wood Alcohol Line,” track 12, “”Up In Heaven & Down In Hell,” and track 14, “My Lonesome Song”—feature churning guitar riffs that are reminiscent of a simplified John Lee Hooker, and acoustic slide playing that will remind one of the early Muddy Waters.
The jazz-blues numbers—which aside from those already mentioned, are comprised of track 2, “let’s Do The Boogie All Night,” track 5, “Dr. Lonely,” track 6, “Crazy Tones,” track 8, “Goodbye My Good Luck,” track 10, “S.B.T.,” and track 13, “Mr. Rob”—are all much indebted to modern guitar jazz, but have an inlay of blues as well. Their blues is jazzy, and their jazz is bluesy.
Fifteen Raindrops is essentially an acoustic CD, although electric guitar is used for emphasis in solos, and acoustic guitar carries most of the instrumental burden aside from Karapiperis’s harp solos and accompaniment.
The playing is first-rate, soulful as well as technically well done, and Karapiperis’s harp solos are creative extensions of the basic Sonny Boy Williamson II approach, with strong showing by Karaperis as well on vocals.
His gruff bass-baritone is evocative and emotionally resonant, as he shifts from indignant despair on track 8, “Goodbye My Good Luck,” and track 9, “Up In Heaven & Down In Hell,” to a Mephistophelean seductiveness on track 2, “Let’s Do The Boogie All Night,” and track 5, “Dr. Lonely.”
The volume of Karapiperis’s vocals range from conversational to a half-whisper—he is not a shouter—and fully expressive over a range of themes.
His original lyrics, while partaking of some classic blues imagery and themes, are not copycat, but unique, poetic and evocative, with a true literary quality.
His truly original lyrics motivate songs of strikingly different themes and modes of expressing traditional themes that, while they originate in traditional blues and jazz, re-state them with maverick artistry.
Fifteen Raindrops in an Ocean of Blues Tales is an adventurous album by American blues standards: Not only does it blur style lines within blues and blur genre lines between blues and jazz, it does so with aplomb and effortless ease; it also punctuates the music with lyrics that are surrealistic, brittle and essentially poetic and literary—and does this with aplomb and effortless ease as well.
An unusual musical journey indeed—and well worth the ticket price.

In these uncertain times, listeners and musicians all over the world are reminded almost daily what it means to have the blues. Memphis, Chicago and New Orleans all lay claim to being the home of the blues but the music has spread throughout the world, far beyond the Mississippi Delta area that nurtured the origins of the genre.
Small Blues Trap is a quartet based out of several villages in the central Greece countryside. The band was formed in 2004 and consists Paul Karapiperis on lead vocals, harmonica, slide steel guitar and keyboards, Panagiotis Daras on lead and rhythm guitar. Lefteris Besios on bass and Stathis Evageliou on drums. Their lengthy list of influences is a “who’s who” of important blues innovators. The list also includes Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart, which isn’t surprising once you hear Karapiperis sing. His deep, thick, raspy voice certainly brings to mind both of these better-known singers.
Musically, Small Blues Trap uses blues as a foundation on this all-original set list, mixing in some rock and a few jazz influences to create a unique approach that avoids the pitfall of trying to sound like a traditional blues band. They may use a standard boogie guitar riff on “It Took Me a Long Time” but the cut gets a boost from Karapiperis, who whips off a lightning-quick harp solo before Daras lays down a equally fine guitar solo. “It’s True” uses a shuffle beat as the band describes their love for blues music despite being so far from the land where it started. Daras shines on lead guitar on “The World is Painted Blue Again”, his clean tone dominating the proceedings. The title track is a darker track with an arrangement that emphasizes Daras on acoustic guitar. Musically interesting, the cut loses impact due to an obtuse lyrical narrative.
On “Seven plus…”, the group sounds uncannily like Dire Straits, with Daras recreating Mark Knopfler’s guitar sound to perfection while Karapiperis uses his harp to add variety to the track. They deliver another tribute on “Roy B.”, dedicated to the late Roy Buchanan. This moody song stops short of maudlin sentiments but misses capturing the essence of Buchanan’s legacy. “Strange Melody” has a slow, languid pace heated up by more fine guitar work from Daras. The band switches to an acoustic approach on “Surely My Body Gets the Message” and makes it clear that they understand the roots of the music. After a lengthy intro, “Buy a Dog” gets a strong beat Evageliou on a tale of warning for a cheating woman.
Small Blues Trap favors moderate to slow tempos, so there aren’t a lot of fireworks on this recording. And the tonal quality of Karapiperis’ vocals may not be to everyone’s liking. On the positive side, the band has established a hybrid sound that gains traction with repeated listens. Daras stands out on numerous tracks for his guitar work but all the members make solid musical contributions. Check them out on their website or at cdbaby.com. You might find yourself liking the way these Greeks interpret the blues.
